Beetle Bags

I placed one of those Japanese Beetle bags in my backyard last weekend. It's supposed to attract and trap all of the beetles flying around in your backyard. When I checked on it last night I had well over 300 beetles in it, simply amazing.

Well this morning I walked out to find an 02' Volkswagon Beetle in my backyard on it's side.

I guess those bags really do work well.

Those bags get to be the truly grossest pit of dying, dead, rotting, buzzing, whimpering insectia torment after a few days. I should know - our tree was being demolished by those little fuckers so we put 3 bags out. In 5 days they were all full to the maximum. Eeeaaaagghghghghgh.

All those things do is attract more beetles to your yard. The bags are only effective if the whole neighborhood uses them and they have adequate overlap. In fact, your neighbors are probably thanking you right now for attracting the beetles from their yard to your yard.

There are sprays you can use that will kill existing beetles and keep new ones from your tree. You can also just go out and knock the beetles off of the tree into a container of soapy water. Beetles attract more beetles, so if you can start getting rid of the ones on your tree, you can cut down on the number that come back.

And treat your lawn with fertilizer that kills grubs, as the beetles lay their eggs in the ground. Next spring, when the eggs hatch in your lawn, it's a short hop to whatever tree they want to eat.

Oh, and dogs love to eat the dead beetles from the bags. I can attest to that personally.
