How do you make a Grilled Cheese Sandwich?

After having a half hour debate with 3 friends last night over how to make a proper grilled cheese sandwich we all agreed that in fact the preparation of said sandwich varys greatly. So if you will my dear readers please tell me how you make a grilled cheese sandwich. I'm really actually interested in your response.

I'll give my method later on today.

EDIT:
Awesome to read all of your methods to this classic dish. I'm the same except instead of butter I use mayonaisse. NWC I love your idea with the waffle iron. I'm trying it this weekend.

Ok, there is a certain way to making the perfect grilled cheese.

1. Heat up the frying pan on low-med heat.
2. Butter one side of the bread where every bit of the bread is buttered lightly.
3. Plop it down in pan. Put one or two slices of cheese. Your choice.
4. Plop other piece of buttered bread on top.
5. Slowly cook the grilled cheese to achieve maximum meltiness and the perfect golden brown.

I use my waffle iron. I butter both sides of the bread of course and add two slices of cheese and then 'squeeze' them between my waffle iron. It makes cute little squares on the bread which makes it taste much better.

Two pieces of cheese in between two pieces of buttered bread. Brown in pan on one side, then flip and repeat. I've also used the "ironing board method" but I prefer the pan or good ole George Forman grill.

Well, I make mine slightly differant. I take the cheese, but instead of cheese I use ham. And instead of butter, I use mayo. And instead of toasting, I don't. yum

LOL Tevin!

I was all...huh? Then I got it. Sheesh.

I warm my pan first...then do what they all do. Cept, I put a tomato slice on it just before I flip it.

I do it the same way as Sky. Isn't that just the traditional way?

I haven't made myself a grilled cheese in forever - and it sounds sooooooo good right now!

And I do exactly what Sky does. I've never heard of the mayo way before!

I take ground beef, shredded, smoked mozzarella and chopped, cooked bacon, mix it together, make patties and grill them. Then I mince up chipotle peppers in adobo sauce and mix them with mayo for a spread. What? It's grilled, and it has cheese.

I melt the butter in the pan - I know it isn't the accepted method, but I don't have the patience to try to wait for the butter soften up enough to spread it properly. This was I get an even coating and I don't tear up the bread.

Then I put some more butter in the pan during the flip.

I use 1 and 1/2 to 2 slices of cheese, put them between two slices of bread. Then, I cut out a big chunk of butter and throw it in the pan to melt, I let the bread soak up the butter and add another chunk when I flip it. MMmmm good. I had grilled cheese with tomato soup the day you posted this. Viva La Grilled Cheese!
